At age 17 I was married, going to college and working. No time for such foolishness.

A lot of kids at this age have had everything given to them and not really had to work for it. Nor have they had to take responsibly for their actions because mom and dad bail them out. They're going to find out the hard way that the real world isn't all fun and games.
