BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Duff Goldman, Food Network star and Charm City Cakes mastermind, has a Hollywood year ahead of him.
He and his creative team are concocting uncommon creations out of fondant, gum paste, Styrofoam, wood and of course cake batter for the premieres of “Where the Wild Things Are,” “Get Smart” and the latest installments of the “Batman” and “Indiana Jones” franchises.
After honing his skills at the Culinary Institute of America and working as a pastry chef under acclaimed chefs, Goldman, a University of Maryland Baltimore County graduate, returned to Baltimore in 2000. Eight years later, his business is booming. Charm City Cakes is booked through July with several weeks through the rest of the year and 2009 taken, too. Disco queen Donna Summers is one of the lucky clients.

I would think people would know that some designs would have to require supports or other additions. The actual cake would probably be all I would want to eat anyway I am not a huge frosting fan so I probably wouldn't want to eat the fondant no matter how it tasted.

I read the Examiner everyday on my way into work, and I would think they would know, but I guess not.

When you order from them I think you are really ordering a piece of art.

They are more like sculptures than a cake. From what I've seen, many of the designs less cake and more stuff you wouldn't eat.

Their work is amazing, however, if I order a cake, I want cake. If I want art, I go to a gallery.

On one of the more recent episodes, a Baltimore paper called AoC cakes more style over substance. Everyone at the bakery was really upset and Duff was going to call the paper to complain. I don't really understand why a group like the Harry Potter movie people wouldn't have just had their own construction workers/artists make a sculpture instead of ordering a fake cake from Duff that had nothing edible to it. There must be some benefit of mutual publicity.

They often mention how a particular cake will take them a week to make. Personally I think cake starts getting stale the minute it comes out of the oven. I have heard from local people who have had the cakes that they are really tasty though.

I just watched a bit yesterday. Theme was Dr. Seuss. Where does one start cutting?

I think it would be really neat to have them for a theme party, but I think I would order a regular sheet cake as well. They do make regular cakes, and I have read online reviews that they are great. The fondant taste seems to be the only issue a few people have, but if you really want something to look like something specific that's the way to go and they do a great job.

If you buy a cake from them, you don't just want cake, you want a show. Thats what you're paying for.

True...if I just wanted cake, I'd ask for 'cake only'.
