......But he did set me straight: No Twitter, no Facebook, no involvement online whatsoever. He and his team spend $20,000 a year to kick impersonators off, he says, and he’s so fed up that he’s ready to take down his entire Web site....
FNF, your headline is MUCH better than the article's.
I don't blame AB one bit for the way he feels about those outlets. I don't understand how the author of the article can legitimately make an assumption that AB's crabby.

He’s a nice guy, though, so he went ahead and signed my book and posed for a photo with me, apparently not worried that he’d catch the dreaded social media virus I so clearly am afflicted with.
Geez, lady, what did AB ever do to you? :P
Some people, sheesh!

"You stole my shirt!" About me wearing my blue pineapple shirt
"It's hard to do Palistinian cuisine & crack jokes." "The dogs need new shoes."

"Do this & people will call you a geek. Personally, I'm okay with that."
"I can't help but wonder... is the bunny okay? I'll never know."
You know it is alright that he does not want to participate with the facebook and twitter, but does he think his popularity would be where it is today without the web ? I do not think any chef would be where they are at today if people did not follow their books, recipes, cookware, and such on the web. It sells them, and their products. From my prospective that is like telling the guy who sign your paycheck to take a flying leap. That really does not set well, and look at this way, we would be talking about others if it was not for being able to find his recipes and episodes on the web. I wonder just how far he thinks he would have made it without the web, and without it we sure would not be talking about him. MY

I can understand those who don't want to share every aspect of their life on a daily basis with everyone in the world. Alton is very good to do public events and book signings that many others don't do. I guess it all comes down to what they are comfortable with. It is very difficult to control what goes out on the internet, and anyone that has a website knows you get people who get under your skin participating. While I do have to say the "good" members generally outweigh the annoying or just downright mean people that come along, if you don't heavily moderate a site it can get out of control and even if you do moderate thousands of people can read it before you get to it.
Life on the web would be so much easier if everyone was nice.
I will say I do admire the ones that are willing to put up with some of the abuse I have seen the active chefs take online. It's nice that they can shake off the nasty comments and enjoy their fans. But if they don't want to deal with that I do understand.
Speaking as a huge admirer of Alton's, I do find it sad that because a few nutsos want to impersonate him online he has shunned all forms of Internet communications, including wanting to shut down his own site.
I was disappointed to hear him tell me the same thing, in person, last week. My site was never meant to be anything but glowing praise for him; yet because of the stupidity of a few, he avoids even the good stuff too.
From operating my fan site about AB, I can say that nearly all of the people who visit the site come there out of admiration, respect and wanting answers to cooking questions, news or event info.
I have several friends who are performers, and it's really hard on them when some nut pretends to be them on the internet because they often give misinformation and/or taint the image the person is putting out there as part of their job. Some of these wackos do it to get attention, freebies, and other things that they have not earned, and it takes away from the real person's livelihood. While I'm sad that AB doesn't participate in any of the social networking sites, I think that by being openly opposed to doing it, he is taking credibility away from the fakes and protecting his image/family.
I have found an Alton Brown page on facebook. I'm not sure if a fan did it or if he did it and fans write there, but here's the facebook link if anyone's interested in what I found.
I've had that page on my groups list for a while. It's just a fan page. Only one comment has been made by the "creator."
Then again, most people on there do think that Alton will see their posts because no one says otherwise... :P
