Connectedness, Happiness, Cookies

I am thrilled to say that I am typing this blog entry on my brand new laptop! Whooo-hooo! I no longer have to feel isolated and abandoned. To celebrate, I give you cookies!
I usually don't do anything too crazy for chocolate chip cookies. I use the recipe on the back of the Nestle's package, and just substitute butter flavored Crisco for the real butter. I always found that the real butter made the cookies spread too much, and the Crisco made them puffier. I was in the mood for cookies recently, and I decided to browse Alton Brown's baking book, I'm Just Here For More Food. I don't think I had ever made any cookies from the book before, so I just flipped to the index and looked under cookies to see what he had.
Alton breaks up the book into chapters based on methods such as the creaming method, the straight dough method, the biscuit method, etc. When I saw the chocolate chip cookie recipe listed in the index, I expected to find it in the creaming method section. I was startled when I flipped to the page to compare to the Nestle recipe to find it in the muffin method section. The muffin method, for real? Muffins are so easy! I had to try it.

I've never made the chocolate chip cookies from AB's book, but I adore the chewy version from Good Eats. Those are one of the first things I tried to make from the show and they are dead on perfect

However, I highly recomend the ginger cookies from AB's baking book. I make those at Christmas and they are outstanding. Taste like a ginger snap but they are chewy. Delightful!

When I was a little girl a woman down the street who would babysit for a playmate of mine made a similar cookie and she used to give them to us with pink lemonade. It's one of my favorite childhood memories of food. She was a very grandmotherly lady. Her name was Pearl. I wish I would have got her recipe. That one is VERY close though.
