I Love Alton, I really do ...

But there is something that bothers me. How does he know that some of his hardware store items do not have things on them that are not food grade? I know he uses pottery and stones from the garden section, and tonight's episode just had a paper bucket that is used for paint mixing to put his fried chicken in. He has used a scraper from the home improvement section for a board scraper.

What if some of these things have lead or some chemical in it because they were never intended for food use?

These are the things that trouble my mind.

Yeah, I've seen him do that stuff. I'm not sure I'd buy the stuff at the hardware store and cook on it.

I agree. I bought a beautiful ceramic platter from Pier 1. It was for placing various sizes of candles on it but thought it would make a beautiful platter for food. Good thing I flipped it over and in big letters said, "NOT INTENDED FOR USE WITH FOOD." Went on to say the hazards. Unless it states it is suitable to use with food, I wouldn't use it.

True, and his pizza stone is one of those big lawn and garden ceramic tiles. Who knows what they put in those things.

I fear for Alton's life.

His pizza stone is made of clay. With a lttile research you can find out if anything is food grade or not. Most of the time things in the hardware store don't say. Many ceramic things are ok as long as they are not glazed. Like bricks and alton pizza stone.

Some woman on the south beach festival asked him about using a military surplus box and if it was "safe" so I guess he gets that a lot.

I was watching this Feasting on Asphalt when they were eating on the Mississippi River and I think he said they cooked potatos in Mississippi water. I'm sorry, no way I'd be doing anything with that water right out of the River. I hope they treated it or tested it or something. But they were complaining about barges going past all night long, how could they possibly use that water? Am I missing something here?
