Christmas Trees

When do you put up your Christmas tree? And, is it real or artificial?

We get a real tree at the tree farm a few miles from here. Just a beautiful place in the foothills of the Coastal mountain range.

Years ago we use to have a big holiday party and I would do two trees. One in the living room, which was artificial, and a real one in the family room.
Now we just do one in the family room. I love the smell of a fresh tree.

Today I'm going to put up a holiday wreath on the door. Not sure what theme I'm using this year. Doing the inside entry with pink poinsettias, bows and garland. I love decorating for the holidays.

Since we moved to Florida, we have been mail ordering our tree. Whenever we buy a live tree in the state, they never last very long...too dried out before we even get it home :-(

We order from a company in the Carolinas [I think?]. I'll double check and post the link once I find the post card.

Typically we have it delivered for mid December.

I use to send my parents a tree from here in Oregon. I'd go pick it out, cut it and have it shipped. They lived in the Chicago area and just loved getting their Oregon tree. It would last a long time.

Many of the trees you get in Florida were probably cut in October and shipped in November. We use to have a company that did shipping and Christmas trees would ship right after Halloween. It's no doubt they would dry out sooner than a fresh cut one.

We get a real one. And usually put it up the first week of December. They say some that cut them early will sink them to the bottom of a lake to keep them from drying out before Christmas. We usually get ours from the farmers market from local tree farms.

I am still trying to figure out where I can put mine this year. I will be glad when the downstairs is finished. Hopefully next year I can really do Christmas up right. I have thought about getting a small artificial for this year I can use after we start having the real one downstairs.

We put ours in Kenosha up last weekend. Its a prelit fake one. At home we usually go to Home Depot and buy a precut live one. When I was little we used to go cut down a tree from a farm but a few years ago they had raised the price to $55 a tree. Thats a lot, so now we do the home depot thing.

I wanted to put up our tree yesterday, but my husband left for a camping/canoing trip. So, I've been sitting here pouting over it, because I've got all this time on my hands for once and he's gone. Besides, I love decorating and it gets me really excited and in the mood for Christmas.

We have an artificial tree. My husband is allergic to the real ones. It's fine though, our tree is actually really beautiful and I don't have to worry about vacuuming up needles.

So I finally got impatient enough tonight that I put up the tree and strung the lights by myself. I must have done something wrong, because it it leaning ever so slightly to the left. He'll have to fix it for me tomorrow. There are currently no ornaments on the tree, we'll do that together tomorrow.

I decided to string some lights outside through the flowerbed that is between our porch and the walkway. I had plugged in the lights in the house before I went outside and they worked. After I went to plug the lights in on the porch, I shocked myself incredibly hard three different times. My arm tingled for half an hour. Needless to say, there are no lights on outside. I'm not sure what happened.

Do you like colored lights or clear lights? I like colored lights on the Christmas tree and clear lights outside. I think the clear lights are prettier, but the colored lights on the tree remind me of my childhood and seem much more homey to me. One of these years I might do a theme tree.

I like red green and clear lights on my tree. And we have a clear light little spiral "tree" for outside.

Does anyone have any crazy "tree traditions"? My husband family has this tree topper that we affectionately call "Disco Angel" - they've had it since the early 1970's. It's a plastic angel that blinks in all sorts of wacky colors. It finally broke in the early 90's - we were all so happy to see it go...but they sent it out to be repaired, and now it's back to stay!
