Recycling and going GREEN!

So, today I was really into the recycling mode. I always recycle at the curb but there are some things that need special attention.

I took all my plastic flower pots back to the nursery so they could reuse them. It's a great program where they take back the plastic and clay pots and use them for the spring/summer plants.

Then, I had some items that the curb doesn't take and brought those to the recycle center.

Our daughter has been cleaning out her old room and had a TON of new stuff animals. I called the local hospital and they were accepting them for Emergency Room children/patients. If you have any that you can donate, call your local hospital. There is nothing like a Teddy Bear to make a child feel safe and secure during a crisis situation.

It's funny about the "Going Green" campaign. I have been recycling and very much into saving the planet since 1960. It's nothing new to me. My mother was probably the biggest recycler of her time and really made us think about what we were using.

Happy to see, 48+ years later, that people are FINALLY making this an important issue.

Our city has little bins where they pick up recycling items in on garbage day. I have on occasion seen them put it all in the same truck though.

Ours puts it all in the same truck and then sorts it out wherever they take it. However, they want us to sort it all out first, so it doesn't make any sense. If they are going to dump it all together, why do they give us a hard time? I should call them.

Ours puts it in the same truck as the regular garbage sometimes.

Its a big controversy on campus as to the recycling and whether or not what is put for recycling is actually recycled. The new building is supposed to be green although I wonder how they square that with all the pretty trees they had to cut down to build it and the new parking garage.

My step-father is a big gardener. His compost bins are his life. I don't have the same opportunities living in town without a yard but I do recycle all household products. I take my own bags to the grocery or use a basket at market. I get very little junk mail.

It bothers me a lot when companies use green as an advertising gimmick. I don't think there are any standards for what constitutes green so that term gets thrown around a lot. I don't think green has anything to do with having to buy more stuff.
