Rep Power: 1 | Chef Jackets The other night on Ace of Cakes, MaryAlice wore a chef's jacket at one of those cake contests on FN. She, along with Geof and Duff were judges. I always thought that wearing the white jacket was the privilege of someone who graduated from culinary school only. (I don't know if MaryAlice did or didn't.) So anyone know the rule or tradition? |

Rep Power: 10 | I don't know about the jackets, I know the hats have meaning.
You can buy chef jackets at Williams Sonoma. |

Rep Power: 10 | I have seen some of the cooks on restaurant makeover wearing them when the chef comes in to redo their kitchens. I assume the chef tells them to wear one to make a better impression. |

One, I wore as head cook at The Viking, a small restaurant/snack bar, and I still have it. The other I bought on eBay, an Executive Chef Jacket with cloth buttons...
Both jackets, I ironed on the Food Network Logo. just for giggles...they look pretty good. I wear them when asked to cook for friends, which is pretty rare these days. I use a white golf cap, like Chef Paul Prudhomme used to wear. What a sight!
Hey, what I would like to find is one of those denim jackets with the colored liners, like Mario and Cat have on Iron Chef America.
Anyone have any idea where to find one of those?

Hey, Isilzha,
Did you get your name from a show called Babylon 5? Just curious...there is a saying I can't get out of my mind from that show...

Chefwear sends me their catalog; I have no idea why. Here's one for you Doug: Chef Clothing, Chef Clothes, Chef Uniforms: Chefwear Denim Chef Jacket (Five-Star) 5000 - Chefwear
if you scroll down you'll see where you can pick the lining. |

Rep Power: 1 | Doug, when you wear them, do you find them a little constricting? I'm a roll-up-your-sleeves kinda cook and any time I see anyone on TV cooking with either one of those on or something long-sleeved, I get the heebie-jeebies. Cooks like RR and SL drag their sleeves through their food. And let's not even talk about them jamming their hands into a big bowl of meatloaf to mix. Yikes! And quite unsanitary as well. Anyway, back to my question. Do you find them uncomfortable to wear?

Rep Power: 10 | I like to have freedom of movement as well. I will wear an apron but need my arms free.
They not only get their sleeves in the food, what about their hair hanging over the food? Yuck. They need to pull it back. Remember hairnets?
