The Calming effect of the Food Network, By Jonathan Hoenig

    Food Network

I’ve written before about the bizarrely calming effect of Food Network and its restorative qualities are even more pronounced during tough economic times. I’ve never once heard Bobby Flay or Paula Deen mention the yield curve or spend even a moment discussing the creeping inflation being created by the government’s stimulus efforts.

For that reason I find Food Network a wonderful way to escape. After a long day wrestling with the stress and uncertainty of the economy, there’s something about watching Guy Fieri eat a hamburger or Giada De Laurentiis chop fennel that calms me like nothing else.

I think Jonathan should get a judges seat on Iron Chef. If pro football players and Nascar reporters can do it, he can too.

I know I have mentioned this before but some of the newer members might have missed it.

I started watching the Food Network when my husband was in Iraq. I had been watching the news and keeping it on during the day but every time there was a breaking news alert I would nearly have a heart attack. I knew I needed to change the channel. Since I am in and out of the room with the TV doing things around the house I wanted something I would be able to pick up on even if it was in the middle of a time slot, so I started watching the food network. I just loved it, it was calming for me as well ... kept my mind off things (a little) and I started following more and more of the shows and found l liked most of them. Of course I also liked the internet, and I eventually began to look for other people online who shared my interest. From there it became a big part of my life online.

Anyone else have a Food Network therapy story?

I came across Next Food Network Star on On Demand when I was trying to crawl out of a very, very dark period. I got hooked on the show and looked forward to watching all the episodes. Guy Fieri and his fun attitude also kept my mind off things. I've been watching ever since.

Food Network is wonderful for winding down and not worrying about something. And it generally pretty safe to watch with the whole family without being embarrassed.

I guess for me, it was a necessity, I was in college, my mind was in high gear, ADHD, and it was a way to learn without being stuck in a class room, or having some professor up there saying memorize this, and allowed me the freedom to change the recipes along with learning how to cook a meal I could be proud of. I know some of you are going your 56 years old and you watched this in college, well I retired at 41 and went back to school at 43. Which was in 93, so it is an escape of sorts in to my world of a famous chef cooking for the king, and I am the king. A nice way to escape the harsh reality of all the turmoil present in our everyday society.

prepared with passion and served with love !

I watch it because one, I enjoy it, and two, it's far more soothing than the news. Two minutes of the news can stress you out for the rest of the day!
