What will both of my kids eat (besides chicken nuggets?)
I am Sooooo frustrated!! I made pork stroganoff and my daughter ate it, but my son said it was gross. They will both eat chicken nuggets and weird cheap TV dinners (ummm,. Banquet anyone?) But when I try to make something homemade, at least one of them cries foul. What is with a child's palate and how do I adapt it to mine?????? I watched Alton's weird parsnip episode, but that's a side dish - what do I feed these kiddos besides chicken nuggets and mac and cheese?

Ughhhhh. Chef I am NOT! LOL
Forgot to mention, they are 9 and 11 years old.
but Chef you can be ! Do you and your husband order the same exact dish when you go out to eat ? it is good your daughter likes it add one more to her list. I know it is nice if everybody would eat the same thing at the same time when cooking for a family, doesn't happen. I grew up with 5 brothers and 5 sisters, there were 8 of us at home at one time, even though we did not like the same thing we never went hungry, we did not like dinner, that night it was OK peanut butter and jam sandwich were not to bad for a replacement, but we always had to try the dish, that came from Grandma, almost every Sunday it was at her house for dinner, I am talking sit down, plated served and if it wasn't cleaned, she knew why. That is where we learned table manners. she was a teacher by trade grandpa he would just look and smile so you knew you better mind your P's & Q's, or deal with his wrath, never did now what that was, which was OK with me. But back to the kids just keep trying different stuff, it is hard, I know, I been married over 10 years and still finding stuff my wife will not eat and I have done 99% of the cooking, so go figure. Good luck keep cooking and trying new dishes, one day you will find something they both love and you will go why did I not think of that earlier.

I have this problem with my son, he is 9. I know people say if you fix it and they get hungry they will eat it, but he won't. He would become malnourished. People who say that have never met this kid.
I buy chicken tenders uncooked and brown them in a skillet sometimes with but usually without breading and I do that for the whole family so I am not fixing 2 different meals. My son likes ham, if we have a meat he won't eat I keep slices of ham in the fridge to just heat up for him. He won't eat potatoes, so he gets applesauce (or mac and cheese) whenever we have a potato side. He will eat canned green beans because he tried them at school and they have so little flavor he prefers them that way. So that's his vegetable of choice.
Fruit is a good side, he has grapes and things like that to substitute for some sides he won't eat. When I make baked beans. I fix the bacon in the oven the way Alton does then save the bacon for him and use the rendered fat. When it's dinner time I just reheat it in the microwave. He loves bacon. He likes salsa, so things he will eat and dip in that works well.
When I make tacos I put tomato puree in the meat because he won't eat tomatoes on the tacos. He never knows they are in there.
This isn't for young children....I'd say 8 years and older?
Buy some 6" bamboo skewers (I get mine at CostPlus, but party stores sell them as welll) and put a variety of veggies, cheese and chicken/steak pieces on it.
Children seem to love when food is presented in a different fashion and the wooden skewers work wonders.
You can do a breakfast one with cut up fresh fruit and breakfast meats.
Try making their lunchbox meals more interesting and make pinwheels sandwiches, cut in pieces and put them on the skewer. Then have a skewer of veggies or fruit to go along with it.
I'd be curious to hear if this works for your children.
Well, I have only one big kid (the DH) who will eat anything on a plate. But, when growing up, I was more open to trying more foods then my younger brother. About all he would eat was meat, potatoes and bread and still eats that mainly today. Guess some kids never change their food choices when they grown up.

I was that child, stubborn as I could be. I had severe food allergies until I was 4 so didn't develop a taste for many things as a baby, there wasn't a green vegetable that I could eat. When I grew out of those allergies, I was horribly picky, I still sort of am.
I am adding new veg to my diet slowly but surely as an adult.

I am keeping my eye on this thread - just can't give a long response right now. I am taking an online class for my certification and trying to complete it in 4 days or less - acck!
I have said before here but if you missed this one I will repeat it. The only canned soup I ever buy is chicken noodle. If we have something he won't eat at all, meaning I can't give him some of what we are having and substitute sides I will give him noodle soup. He also likes ravioli they make some better versions in the frozen section and you can package up in the freezer with your own sauce and blend veggies into it so it just looks like red sauce once it's a pureed. He will also eat the stuff in a can, Mom got it for him when they were camping and he was okay with it.
Well I found out some news today that never really occurred to me as a reason my son won't eat some things. His front teeth are out of line to the point where he can't fully bite down with his back teeth. He has to slide his bottom jaw out for them to come together all the way. It's a lot of work for him to chew. I never realized, and he didn't know any different so it seemed normal to him. He will have to have braces. Maybe once the teeth straighten out he will eat more.
I don't know if something like that could be part of the issue for your kids, but I thought I would add it here. I guess sometimes there are more reasons than we realize.
