Here in NC, your sanitation grade needs to be posted, the grade includes both a letter (A-B-C, you will be shut down for less than C) but a number grade. You can also go online and check out the sanitation report of any place inspected by the heath department and you will get to see what the violations are.
This is not a perfect system, because a few years back, a deli in a grocery store would loose points if the public bathroom was dirty, which makes no sense, would you want your deli worker cleaning toilets before serving you? I believe that this has been fixed
My company will shut down a department that scores below 90% until the problem is rectified, although the health department allows a B to remain in business, but with much more frequent inspections.

I am sure there are places where if we knew some of the things they had in the kitchen we would never eat out again.

Kitchen Nightmares ? makes you wonder can this be true ? I am not sure about Houston never seen anything posted, but we use to have Marvin's report every week SLIME in the ICE MACHINE but don't have that anymore. Have not seen anybody reporting on restaurant conditions lately around here.

When I tell people about my Quiznos I always tell them that I eat there and that should tell them about how clean it is. My boss would always yell at us about keeping things wiped clean and wiped down, but it does keep the place very clean.
Those who forget the pasta are condemned to reheat it.

From my experience, your chains are much cleaner than your high dollar restaurants. They were disgusting. One reason I always had problems with the word "chef."
There is room for all God's creatures....right next to the mash potatoes.
You must learn to love to learn.

We have a local news segment called "Dirty Dining". Really interesting what the health department sees that we don't. Thank goodness they watch out for us! We can also find out all the information online. I've looked up places we frequent and they all measure up to the health department standards.

I would agree.
Chain grocery stores are the same, the chain that I work for buys their cleaning supplies from Proctor and Gamble, and once a month a rep from that company comes to each store and inspects all food prep departments and storage areas. This is our first line of defense, and he is actually much more detailed than the state health inspector. If the Proctor and Gamble guy finds problems, people are sent to retrain the department on cleaning procedures.
I am always a little concerned when eating at privately owned places because I know that they may only see a health inspection every 6-9 months. There was a local place that was graded low, they were told that in two weeks they would be reinspected, and they scored even lower, they were shut down until a professional cleaning crew was hired to clean it up, that's just scary, they were told what to fix and did nothing!
