A new trend among the Pizza chains, Whole Wheat Crust

I am noticing a lot more advertisements for pizza with whole wheat crust in the big pizza chains.

I like whole wheat crust, I make it often. There are a few hippie pizza places here that make fantastic whole wheat crusts.

I wonder if the ones from the chains are good? I am always skeptical that they will drastically change something that made them popular to begin with. I am wondering if they are just putting a little bit of whole wheat into the regular recipe to give the illusion of being better for you.

that is most likely the case, especially with the chain places.

There is a place here called Lilly's and it is fantastic.

Here is a description of their pizza.

Lilly's continues to offer healthy alternatives to the norm, all of which are hand prepared in our restaurant Daily. Our goal is to provide you with the most natural and organic opportunities while creating the most delicious pizzas imaginable. And, we have a little fun along the way!

You may pick one of our delicious Specialties, or choose to create your own favorite Veggie, Vegan (our dough contains trace amounts of clover honey), or Meat dish. We also offer a large selection of Salads, Snacks, Strombolis, Zones, and Lasagnas.

Our produce is hand selected daily by Touch of Green Organic Produce, Melvin's Gardens, and Blue Sky Farms. Many produce and non-produce ingredients are Certified Organic or are Organically Grown; anything else is purely natural. We make our dough Daily with Organic All-Wheat Flour stone ground freshly for Lilly's by Lindley Mills, Eli Whitney, NC. Our homemade Tomato Sauce is done with only organic veggies and certified organic vine-ripened tomatoes. All of our Chicken and Beef toppings are cut fresh to order by Cliff's Meat Market, Carrboro, NC and are completely natural; they have NO antibiotics, added hormones, coloring agents, or preservatives. And in our store, drink pure NC spring water.

I like the regular pizza crust....I am not eating it to be healthy. :P

Is whole wheat really that much better for you? I honestly don't know the difference. I see all the cereals and what not changing to whole grains and stuff like that, but I am not sure what the deal is concerning whole wheat and whole grains...etc. Educate me! ha ha

PS. I am all about that Lilly's place. It sounds GREAT!

Whole grains are full of fiber, vitamins and antioxidants, studies show that whole grains reduce the risk of heart disease, by lowering cholesterol. When wheat is processed into white flour these benefits are stripped away, and some of the vitamins are replaced (called enriched) but not enough to make a difference.

I used to be all about white bread, but have changed my tastes to prefer whole grain breads. I do still enjoy good French, Italian, and Sourdough breads though because those are best with white four.

I mean, if I'm eating pizza, why would I be thinking healthy? It's not something I eat everyday.
Sometimes I think they are taking the fun out of some foods.

My parents get the store loaves that you can ball up in your fist and it makes a little dough ball. Dad says I have spoiled my kids because they don't like that bread when they stay with them.

Gummy white bread is the best with mayo and the crust removed. Roll it, squish it, eat it!:tongue2:
