Did you watch? According to the Food Network, a whole lot of you did. In fact, it was the network's highest-rated daytime debut!
"Down Home with the Neelys" became the highest-rated series debut in the five-year history of Food Network's popular "In the Kitchen" weekend block after its Saturday, February 2 premiere (11am ET/PT). The new show, featuring Pat and Gina Neely, African American restaurateurs from Memphis, TN who create approachable Southern BBQ comfort food, was watched by nearly 2 million people.
I have some thoughts on the show that I'll share in the days to come (actually trying to edit a video down).
Overall, I thought it was a fair pilot episode. There was some shaky editing and poor choices throughout that I wouldn't have made, but the food was definitely different and unique.
Even if you didn't feel like trimming membrane off a rack of ribs all day, did it at least make you want to drive to Memphis and pick up some of this famous couple's food?
I had never heard of them until recently. She seems like a hoot and has a great personality from what I have seen from the commercial. They will probably do very well.
I watched this today. Gina is so loud, with a terribly grating voice, constantly telling her husband what to do and calling him Daddy. Pat though is soft spoken and laid back; I really liked him. They made deep-fried pork chops covered with vegetable soup, in the same bowl. The pork chops were left whole. How you gonna eat that, Daddy? I won't be tuning in again.
I meant to watch it but then I got involved in scrubbing the grout in the bathroom, that I forgot. I had seen a commercial on FN, for a new cleaning service company and that gave me the bug. Boy, is the bathroom ever sparkling!!!

The first ep is still on my DVR but I watched yesterday's show. I thought the same thing, May......deep-fried pork chops in a bowl of veggie soup?? It still didn't look appetizing to me. Call me a purist but I like my veggie soup sans a hunk-o-pork, LOL.
I thought the cornbread recipe looked promising with the sauteed onions and broccoli added. I'll probably give that recipe a try.
Overall, I thought Gina's demeanor and voice were annoying and I thought her comment about 'cutting the cheese' and her little pat on his behind were a little much and did not belong on a cooking show.
I've never heard of The Neely's but then I don't live in the south. The first time I ever heard of them was when they were on "Paula's Party" for a barbecue 'show-down'.
I'll probably keep recording the show just for some interesting recipes.......that is, until I can't stand to listen to Gina any more.
A sparkling bathroom is a thing of beauty, BerryBaby.
The Neelys are on at 11:00 eastern, Saturday mornings. I can't believe at that hour they were the highest rated debut show ever. Aren't most people up and about and busy on a Saturday morning?
