Nestle — which sells nearly all the canned pumpkin in the U.S. — says poor weather hurt its harvest, creating a potential shortage of its Libby's pumpkin pie products through the holidays.

In a statement to customers this week, Nestle said heavy rains made it nearly impossible to pick its pumpkins during this year's harvest.

The longer the pumpkins sit in the muddy fields, the more they deteriorate. As a result, Nestle said this week that it would not pack any more pumpkins this year, which means it may be hard to find its canned pumpkin and pumpkin pie filling product until next year's harvest.

"Mother nature had other plans for us," the company said in an open apology to customers online.
If you don't want to wrestle with a big turkey for Thanksgiving, Cornish hens are a good alternative.
They're inexpensive, petite (perfect for a small gathering) and can make for an elegant presentation.
Most are sold frozen and come two to a package. Recently, I picked up a package -- normally $7-$8 -- on sale for $5.
One hen weighs just more than a pound with its bone, though some can weigh up to 2 pounds each. A whole Cornish hen is enough for one generous serving. Or you can split the hen in half for two servings.
While analysts are anticipating a difficult holiday season, the forecast for sales of food and drink is looking merry. The category is expected to see the most growth this year compared with other categories research by IBISWorld.

Consumers are not expected to drastically change their spending patterns from last year. However, Christmas sales are estimated to grow 0.19 percent to $128.1 billion across four traditional categories: Food & Drink, Gifts, Decorations and Other (flowers, postage, etc.). IBISWorld predicts Food & Drink sales to increase 11.65 percent this year to $27.23 billion from $24.84 billion last year. The Gift channel is not facing as much cheer, with a continued decline of 2.60 percent, according to IBISWorld, finishing the season at $81.91 billion.

A group of young Colombian student chefs have unveiled a new dessert made from passion fruit and Viagra, claiming it had aphrodisiac effects on everybody who has tried it.
"We got the idea four months ago when we were dealing with a nutrition project for older people," Juan Sebastian Gomez said at an international gastronomy fair on Thursday.

"It occurred to us that we could use passion fruit, with all its connotations.. and Viagra, and we came up with this dessert," added Gomez, who along with his three colleagues is studying the culinary arts at a national college.

Gomez said the new dessert was tried on a group of volunteers.
Fried chicken night goes upscale
Kevin Pang
Tribune reporter
November 12, 2009

Fried chicken is a dish eaten in shame. Some nights when the urge arises, I rush to the neighborhood Kentucky-style chicken emporium in a hooded sweatshirt and tinted sunglasses, find the farthest table from the entrance and begin desecrating the contents of a bucket.

Is this because there's no civilized way of eating fried chicken? Part of the appeal is its tactile pleasure -- greasy fingertips gripping on craggy bits of skin, the bite, the crunch, the audible affirmation of a chicken fried right. The licking of fingers, the napkins turned translucent. The dish is best consumed alone, out of sight of other diners.

But the shame-ridden can eat in daylight once more. With comfort food gaining traction as haute cuisine, white-tablecloth restaurants are embracing this humble Southern dish and elevating it to fork-and-knife status. What's more, a number of restaurants are devoting one night a week to the crispy bird, a "fried chicken night" that's equal parts reverence to the dish and marketing gimmick.
There seems to be a general perception that foodies like anything and everything. Truthfully, I don't think I've ever seen Rachael Ray put a bite of food in her mouth that wasn't followed by "yum-o" or "delish!" And I can't help but wonder if that's always true.

It says something about America, no doubt, that we’ve reached a point where eating food is no longer enough—we now must be entertained by it. And boy, are we ever. In the past 10 years, more than ever before, food-related programming loomed large (on cable, in particular) and during the same decade that bid goodbye to Julia Child—a pioneer of so many things, including food TV—we welcomed the shiny young faces of Rachael Ray, Giada De Laurentiis, Bobby Flay and more into our homes.
But in much the same way that the past 10 years have ushered in a Golden Age of Television, so too has it seen a shift in the quality of food TV. There’s still a place for the friendly host walking us through all manner of chopping and poaching on camera in a faux-homey studio kitchen, but this decade’s best food programming has plied our species’ basic need for sustenance with our culture’s love of competition and thirst for voyeurism into shows that are suspenseful, hilarious, challenging, maddening, and stomach-rumble-inducing—often all at once.
Here are our picks for the 10 best food TV shows of the decade. Dig in.

In what might seem to defy the laws of comfort foods, researchers are setting out to concoct a healthy, yes healthy, ice cream.
If the food scientists are successful, ice cream would become another so-called functional food, alongside whole oat products and foods made with soy protein, which have scientifically established health benefits beyond basic nutrition. (The United States doesn't currently have a formal definition for functional foods.)
In addition to ice-cream's fat- and calorie-filled ingredients, the researchers hope to add dietary fiber, antioxidants and probiotics (gut bacteria that support a healthy digestive system) to your delectable dessert. Antioxidants could protect cells from damage caused by molecules called free radicals and are suspected of helping to prevent a slew of diseases.

Our human ancestors did not eat much fruit, but instead consumed a lot of root vegetables, nuts, insects and some meat, according to a new study.
The findings may help to explain how all humans emerged in the first place, the authors believe.
Early hominid ancestors may have left the trees to take advantage of ground-level foods, a behavioral shift that could have resulted in two of the major defining characteristics of humans: unique teeth and walking on two legs, a mode of locomotion known as bipedalism that is extremely rare elsewhere in the animal kingdom.
