Description:
A somewhat bizarrely (broadly) seasoned, yet extremely simple Mussels dish, using common spices you probably already have on hand. This is for a super fast and cheap snack for one person. For about $3-$4 You get the flavors of Asia, Italy, Mexico and the Southwest all influxed into a dish you can make in less than 10 minutes. (Great beer food BTW!)
This was thrown together by accident one night, probably after watching the Food Channel but has become a staple snack of mine. I am really glad that I documented the recipe, as it seems to be a combination of spices that work quite well together, and especially with tomatoes and mussels. One trait of this dish is that it coats your mouth with the flavors and you can still taste it (and want some more) hours later. I Hope you will enjoy it.
Other: Ingredients:
Time:
10 Minutes
Difficulty:
Easy
Serving Size:
1
  1. (1) Pound Frozen, cooked, cleaned mussels
  2. (1) 14 oz Can Sliced or Diced Chipotle Tomatoes
  3. 1 teaspoon Prickly Ash Powder (Asian store item) - Psst, it's the secret ingredient!
  4. 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
  5. 1 teaspoon granulated onion
  6. 1 teaspoon dry Thyme leaves
  7. 1 teaspoon Dill Weed
  8. 1 teaspoon Parsley Flakes
  9. 1 teaspoon Mediterranean Basil Leaves
  10. 1/2 to 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (pizza type) [Heat]
  11. 1 Lemon
  12. 1 Lime
Preparation:
  1. Lightly scrub and rinse Mussels. If you get frozen instead of live, they are often less than half the price, and can save a huge amount of prep time as they are normally already debearded and cleaned.
Instructions:
  1. Bring to a simmer, your can of tomatoes with Chipotle. Add spice mix and simmer for another 1-2 minutes. Turn heat up to high.
  2. Add mussels, lower heat to simmer after 1 minute, and steam 5-7 minutes on medium until open and ready to eat. Discard any closed shellfish. Add fresh squeezed lemon and lime.
  3. Goes great with a side of garlic cheese bread and beer.
  4. Make sure to include any type of bread (a nice hot crusty one is perfect), as your eaters are going to want to sop up the leftover sauce into a bread when done with the shellfish meat itself.

  5. Note: This is a low sodium dish, no need to add salt at all. And after tasting it, you will probably agree that there is no reason to add salt.

  6. Of course you can upsize the recipe with no problem for entertaining. Great snack for the game or poker night. I suspect you may have never tasted anything like this and you will get questions from your friends, like "What is this, Asian, Southwest, Mexican or Italian?". Answer is, "Yes".
