The Bore-met Next Door

Okay, perhaps I'm being a bit harsh on Amy Finley's first stab at a regular cooking show on Food Network, but I had to the use the "bore" pun before somebody else did! (And if someone else did already use it, brava.)

It's not to say that Amy, winner of The Next Food Network Star season 3, was boring... more like the show just lacked any energy... or pizazz overall. It's sad to say this, but the thing that kept me watching the most were these super-elastic facial expressions Amy kept using.

I don't know how she does it, but pretty much any time she speaks her upper lip is pulled to one corner, while the lower is stretched to the other. I'm not making this up!

For those of you who actually watched, I think you can attest to this. This wasn't me trying to be clever and grabbing a shot where Amy was making a funny face. It's pretty much the standard throughout the entire show.

Her bistro theme was fine. She did the standard flank steak with red wine sauce (that I think she did on TNFNS), some cracked potatoes, and a pate a choux dough that she used for gougeres and profiteroles.

Amy kind of suffers from the same thing that plagued Giada early on, which is the inability to smile and speak at the same time. Now, as we all know, Giada is the QUEEN of this... but it must have taken some work. Those early videos of GDL were pretty dismal.

Amy's reactions, however, are spot on:

I'm not sure if this reaction came about because the sauce was, in fact, delicious or if she surprised herself by tasting the burning hot liquid before letting it cool. Anyhow, an "A" for Amy on that one.

The oven did trip her up, though. Poor thing.

That top bar isn't the handle, dear. We know you're new here, but come on:-)

Overall, a fine start. The food, so far, is definitely a change of pace for the network. I still think Ina is a lot better at making the viewer feel at ease with difficult French dishes than Amy is. Perhaps she'll get better with time...

...or they'll put her show on at a new time: 7:00 a.m.

right before the Hearty Boys.

Okay, can I just say A MILLION THANK YOUs??!!!!! I am by far and away not Snaggletooth's biggest fan (first shot, left side). Her lip action is wannabe Elvis meets dumb blond. I admit, I'm still miffed she won. If JAG was going to quit (which I don't think he should have), Rory should have won. Okay, so maybe Rory wasn't the best, but she wasn't a snaggletoothed snob and she didn't cry and want to go home half way through. I'm serious in my belief that no one who cries on these reality shows and wants to go home should win. JAG would have been great, Rory too. Amy's just another cookie cutter of most of the women on FN. (sorry to all that like her) ~~ BTW, don't get me started on the name "the Hearty Boys" that's one discussion that's not pretty.

I wish Jag just had not lied. I don't know how he thought that military deployments would help him win a cooking competition. He was in the military, if people respect that they won't care if he was deployed or not. He made a bad decision, he could have had it all on just what he is.

Either way, Snaggletooth still doesn't deserve a show. Seriously, this years "crop" was the worst so far. It was like watching, hmm, don't know how to describe it, culinary students on the first day of class. Had I not loved Rory on "Popularity" I wouldn't have made it past ep 1.

I agree, JAG shouldn't have lied but Amy never should have won.

We wondered what was up with all the crying. This year was a bunch of crybabies.

When big cigar smoking dude and former Marines start crying, you have to really, really wonder. I hope the next season is better.

"snaggletooth"

That was so "right on"! I dont think she will last long. I think next year they should get judges other than the FN chefs. To me they have lost that sensitivity on being a critic and judging. They seem to forget they were once struggling beginners and they now have become mean and cruel.

As I mentioned in a different post, I don't think the show was "bad," but I did expect/hope for a different format other than the usual studio+chef+adlib=show

Maybe the producers should take away the "let America vote" option. Or, let America vote, but don't count it...just like in real life - LOL!

Seriously, they could have the judges' vote, which is who gets chosen to have the show, and then America vote and that winner gets a big prize or cash or maybe a guest appearance on another show or an editorial feature in a magazine as "America's choice".

One major problem with the "American vote" is that it's just like the elections sometimes, people don't vote for who they want, they vote for who they don't want if their favorite is gone. Or they vote because of some X reason. Like the first winners, they won in large part because the gay community voted en mass, not because they had seen the show and liked what they did but because of who they are. That bothered me. Rory made it clear, she never would have won against JAG because of the Latino vote. If the contestants know this, why can't the Food Network understand it?
