Cooking stars not to everyone's taste
Cooking stars not to everyone's taste
By Catherine Klasne
ORTS Folks in my office -- some of whom opine on this or that as part of their work -- recently let fly on a few celebrity chefs. One "absolutely can't stand" Rachael Ray. I know others join in her feelings because a Google search on Ray's name turns up results almost evenly divided between love and hate.
I'm neutral on Ray. There's another Food Network spawn I've come to regard as more dangerous and -- the big rap against Ray -- annoying. And that's Sandra Lee. The woman always sounds as if she's reading, and her recipes for "semi-homemade" food are like the text on the backs of boxes of every convenience mix made by Kraft or Betty Crocker.

Sheesh! People are SO tough on Sandra Lee. She is (IMO) a pretty lady with a very nice figure (nuff said about THAT)! She DOES have a flat way of speaking, and, I have to admit, I know a few people right here at this radio station who talk like that on-air.
It's a style people pick up early on...and it's difficult to break the habit. We have advertisers that insist on doing their own voice-overs. Awful! I absolutely HATE it, but THEY are paying the fee!
Aunt Sandy just shows you shortcuts...no big deal. Some folks don't have 30 minutes to create and present a full meal. Sandra takes care of that. Instead of trashing the lady, why don't people just change the channel?
She seems to be such a sweet lady, it hurts me to see her talked about like that. I'd HATE to see what they'd say about ME! LOL!
Folks that trash Sandra Lee (or any OTHER Food Network host)...I'd like to see THEM do it! Let's see them do a cooking show. It's easy to sit and watch someone on TV, and be judge, jury and executioner. It's not so easy to be ON THE AIR...believe me, I talk from experience!

I would give her a forum but I can't find enough content for it. I would think she would have a blogger with a feed or something but it's hard to find any Sandra Lee content. She must have fans, they need to step up for her.
Odd too there aren't any Bobby Flay blogs or feeds. I find that strange.
- 11-02-2007 10:22 AM #4I think that's because it's only recently that they've let the FN stars have separate sites. Before they were always pretty tight on where their stars could be found on the internet. His image is pretty well protected and kept close to the FN vest.Odd too there aren't any Bobby Flay blogs or feeds. I find that strange

He does have a site for his restaurants, but Emeril has an RSS feed ... Bobby doesn't.
A lot of fan blogs by outsiders are out there for individual chefs too. But none for Bobby that I could find.

We aren't trashing Sandra Lee, we just don't care for her style and robotic way of speaking. We do change the channel, if there is something else on.
If you go back and read some of the older forum discussions, there are many opinions voiced on the Food Network stars, some favorable, some not.
Sandra has her own show, is a very attractive woman and quite successful. I think we all agree about that. However, there are a lot of people that just don't care for her style. If we all liked the same people and things in this world, it wouldn't be so interesting. The Food Network has something for everyone.
And, yes, I have done a cooking segment on TV and it was fun, but I'm not sure I'd want to do it full-time.
We all agree to disagree...and that is fine with me.BerryBaby

Sandra does make all those drinks herself. She doesn't skimp on those.

I agree if they are going to put out a wide variety of shows they all can't appeal to everyone. I think this forum helps them with feedback from a variety of people. That's why we need fans for all the shows to join into the discussion. Just because one of us doesn't like a particular show it doesn't mean the fans of that particular show can't speak their mind.

Really, BerryBaby? Now that is impressive. I admire anyone that can pull that off.
I've done TV. The camera does not blink. Every twitch, tic, and glance is ampified.
You are a very pretty lady, Berry, and I bet you did fine!
One thing I was told by the Director..."Doug, you would do well by staying in radio..."
They like attractive people. But one has to have talent to do well. BerryBaby, I'd love to see that segment. Where did you do that?
Thanks for the discussion!

Thank you! It was years ago and it is probably in a vault somewhere or destroyed! (LOL) Just a local thing, but it was fun.
My sister took a film class a couple of years ago and used me as her final project. In that film I did a number of things from demonstrating how to do a planter for your patio to a short baking segment.
It was shown on the 'big' screen in a Portland theater downtown. That was very strange to watch myself. Afterward, I had people coming up to me and asking for the recipe. Had to give the credit to Paula Deen as I used one of her recipes. Fun stuff!BerryBaby
