That's true. And usually the big cities that they film many of these shows in have stores with far more available to them than those of us who live in an area where things aren't shipped in from all over the world everyday. Even things that lots of stores have I can go to the store here and it's hit or miss as to whether they will have them. I like the large bean sprouts used in a lot of oriental dishes ... sometimes my store has them sometimes not. Escarole is sometimes there sometimes not. They never have the pretty different colored carrots I see on the food network, just orange for us. I would love to get the yellow or even white or purple I have seen them use. No such luck here though.

I think big city living has spoiled them. I love it when they say "you can get these right in your grocery store" Well living here in the Raleigh area we have lots of variety, but I know from living in rural areas that these ingredients are nowhere to be found.
Most consumers are confused with labels and it would be nice to have someone help sort this out. My favorite new label meant to deceive customers is bread, it will often say something like "5 grams of whole grain per slice", many customers will see this as 5 grams of fiber, when actually it may have maybe 1 gram or less per slice. And don't get me started on how many different grains you can fit in one loaf of bread, is it up to 12 now? And low and behold hardly any dietary fiber!

Rachael says that all the time...that you can get it right there in your grocery store. Or she mentions the 'specialty aisle'...sorry, not all stores have those. Even here in Portland, not all stores have a specialty aisle.
In fact, I was at a BIG supermarket chain before the holiday and asked them where their 'specialty aisle' was and they said, "What's that? I don't think we have one." Well, they didn't and that was somewhat surprising.
Suzie, I have tried the different colored carrots and they were tougher than the orange. They are pretty, but weren't what I thought they would be....kind of stringy.BerryBaby

- 12-31-2007 04:50 PM #35Where I am now living, I have a much larger grocery store than ever before, yet certain things I cannot find or get them to bring in. For example, I needed rice wine vinegar for a recipe a couple of weeks ago. I spent almost an hour in the vinegar aisle. I counted 57 different kinds of vinegar. Not ONE bottle of rice wine vinegar. We don't need 50 kinds of balsamic vinegar I suggest to management to no avail. In the end I made something else as neither of my other two grocery chains had any rice wine vinegar either. It was easy to find in the much smaller store back home. Things like that drive me batty.Rachael says that all the time...that you can get it right there in your grocery store.

I roasted them. Honestly, I wouldn't buy them again. The orange, IMO, have a much better flavor and texture.
Really like using different colored peppers orange, red, yellow. The purple are pretty in a salad. If you cook them, tho, they turn green.
Looking forward to Jamie Oliver's new show. Uses a lot of things from his garden and it all looks really good.
He's a cutie as well!BerryBaby

One of the problems Food Network has, is 'BRANDING". Almost every show has the brand name "taped over" or another (generic or phony) label is plastered over it.
In order for Ellie (LOVE that gal!) to compare items, she'd have to prefer one brand over another, and that would cause problems. Really, because of that, there are certain things we will NEVER see on Food Network. That infuriates me, but radio is the same way. I am allowed to say hi to the staff at our "ABC-TV" affiliate, but NOT allowed to even MENTION our friends at the NBC station. ABC is tied in with our WEATHER INFO.
I LOVE the idea...Ellie knows her stuff. I'd trust her.

That would be a major hurdle, maybe she could just show people how to properly read labels, and decypher confusing nutrition claims. I do think they have to appeal to the every day folk when talking nutrition it can be daunting, many people really have no idea of what is really healthy and what is a gimmick.
