Season 4 Episode 5 of The Next Food Network Star

Episode 5 – June 29 at 10pm ET/PT >>
Iron Chef Cat Cora challenges the remaining six finalists to describe food enticingly for the camera – using dishes they’ve never seen before. Then the finalists must team up to make easy versions of extremely complicated dishes and serve them to a roomful of extremely savvy eaters – the editors and writers from Bon Appétit magazine. The winning duo finds out that their dish will be featured in Bon Appétit magazine and then the next finalist is eliminated.

chef Looking forward to it

From the previews it looks like a lot of the contestants flubbed up. I can't wait to see who does the best.

I am betting on Jennifer going tonight. I just don't think she is ready for doing this on TV. But I think she will continue to be an awesome chef and I hope this helps her career in some way.

BernerMommy, I have been drinking wine and am not sure if I am going to make it! To top it off, daughter was scratching my back. I am almost comatose! If I do make it, my money is on Jennifer. Cute, but not enough self confidence. :-( Is the clown Adam? He needs to calm down or he could be next.

I think them having to describe food they have never seen or tasted was a little rough. I don't think they will ever have to do that if they have their own show. I think that was next to impossible. Shane did an amazing job though.

I've never seen any of the FN stars have to do that. Sure Guy (and Alton on his travel shows) has had to go try food and tell us what its all about, but Guy doesn't just show up and have something thrown in his face and have to describe it. Shane did a good job in a very difficult situation. The challenge really messed up Aaron though.

I'd give Kelsey and Shane a show together. They got the fun, young thing going.

Well I think Aaron did the right thing in tasting it. I think it would have been more fair if they had given them all a chance to take a couple of bites before they started the clock. I mean Aaron's plate had a ton of stuff in it, it would have been hard to say anything if he didn't taste several bites.

On a previous season of Top Chef they had a vaguely similar challenge. The contestants had to take an American favorite, update it, and make it healthier. Maybe it is the healthier aspect that is different in this challenge, but the way they each approached their dishes would have been praised on Top Chef, but the selection committee seemed disappointed that they changed the dishes up a bit. With the time constraints I thought the ways they approached each of the dishes were interesting even if they didn't work out the best.
