Hey sailor! Tattooed food may be next

Given I have the dry heaves every time my 16-year-old daughter talks up tattoos (Kid: “C'mon, Dad, it won’t be where anyone can see it.” Panicky parent: “And that’s a selling point?”), I view word the U.S. government may allow fruit and vegetable tattoos with considerable discomfort.
According to FoodProductionDaily.com, a daily online news service aimed at food and beverage makers, the Food and Drug Adminstration’s decision on food tattoos is “imminent.” Click here for the story.
Apparently a laser beam is used to etch information into the outer cell layers of fruits and vegetables. The tattoo is meant to replace those little sticky labels that denote where the fruit and vegetables come from. These labels can fall or be pulled off, meaning the unscrupulous can make any claim they want about where it came from. Not so with the laser tattoo – it’s there to stay.
