8 Perfect Sleep-Better Foods

8 Perfect Sleep-Better Foods

By David Zinczenko, with Matt Goulding - Posted on Mon, Sep 21, 2009, 4:24 pm PDT

Forget what your mom told you: A glass of warm milk before bed might actually keep you up, rather than lull you to sleep. See, the protein in the milk will boost alertness--and unless it's skim, the fat will slow your digestion, making your rest more fitful. Not exactly the best shut-eye remedy. (Sorry, mom.)

Nothing makes it harder to fall asleep than knowing how important it is to fall asleep. So when the pressure's on, try chowing down on one of these snacks before bedtime to ensure some serious shut-eye; they're all hand-picked and approved by the Eat This, Not That! nutrition team. These 8 sleep-better foods and drinks have been shown to induce feel-good relaxation chemicals, calming your nerves and slowing your racing brain. You can thank us ... tomorrow morning--after a long, restful night.

Totally disagree about the milk. Even my doctors (which you are not) have said milk with two cookies will give you a great nights sleep.

I can honestly attest to this. Milk has never made me alert to 'stay up'.

Please check your facts with accredited doctors.

Your concept of the book is great, however, if people eat these thing on rare occasions, they can't be all that bad. I'll go back to the master, Jack LaLaine (hmm, sp?)...."everything in moderation".

And, that is coming from a pro that is in his 90's!!! I love Jack! I use to watch him with my grandmother back in the 1950's and he is still an icon and going strong. How many people can say that?

Oh, I've tried the wine thing...doesn't work. The wine is great, but no sleep results...sorry to say.

I do the wine thing. I am having some now. My husband can hardly drink wine with dinner or he gets way too sleepy. He can drink beer and he's fine. But wine knocks him out.

All good suggestions for temporary help. If folks are having insomnia issues it's best to look at what is causing the problem also. In many cases you'll find there are organic answers to insomnia.

Too much caffeine/nicotine--Do folks have any idea how much they are ingesting and the huge impact it has?

Too much sugar.

Stress and anxiety and depression.

Medication.

Lack of exercise and activity.

Attacking the causes is the first step in solving the problem.

The popcorn doesn't work either. Each time I've been watching TV at night and had a snack of some popcorn, I can't go to sleep. Each time I end up staying up waaaaay late and going to bed in the wee hours of the morning. Now, a wee nip of bourbon and coke will make me sleep like a baby.

All good points Pajangle, however...

My problem is my brain never stops thinking of creative stuff! I exercise (crazy yoga, which is fabulous!), no caffeine, sugary stuff, no medications...I don't like to take anything, depression...I so darn happy people ask what is wrong with me!

No, I'm just a creative type with an overactive brain that refuses to rest.

Ha, ha, ha... I was lying in bed last night after watching Top Chef and instead of trying to go to sleep, I was "cooking" in my head. I was making my own version of deconstructed Shepard's pie.
