I think the term foodie is fine, but misused by people trying to sound important or confusing it with gourmet. If you go back to the people who coined it and their description is more like most of us here.
According to Wikipedia, Foodies want to learn everything about food, both the best and the ordinary, and about the science, industry, and personalities surrounding food.

I am guilty of a few things on that list as well! And I currently have Kitchen Nightmares on after just returning from City Market here in KC to pick up spices, bulk flours, Italian meats (the Italian place smells like my Nana's kitchen!) & some cheese. And yes, I now have 3 different types of cheese in my fridge.

I love Kitchen Nightmares. I do get the willys sometimes with the sanitary conditions of some of these places. I am so jealous, I've been looking for a good Italian market, and I just can't seem to find one around here.

Oh I know what you mean! Some of those places are just ghastly - I can't believe the board of health hasn't shut them down.
Italian markets are hard to come by for some reason. When I lived in Cincinnati, I went to Jungle Jims & here in KC I go to City Market. City Market is loaded with international cuisine vendors. I wish the Italian place was bigger, but I'm just happy to have one. I also buy bulk spices at the Market - they are $1.00 per scoop! I can refill 2 of my spice bottles with 1 scoop.
We don't have an Italian market nearby, however, Trader Joe's has great salami and cheeses, along with tomato products.
And, yes, right now I have parmesano, Swiss, American, sharp cheddar, provolone and mozzarella (and string cheese and Baby Bels) in the fridge, with two pieces of salami and a package of proscuitto. Also have a bottle of wine and a bottle of champagne (that's a staple!)...red wine on the counter, homemade bread dough....ok, ok, I'm a super foodie geek!!!!

I can assure you that they would not have survived one of my Food Service Sanitation Inspections.
I am particularly fond of Italian cuisine. In fact, one of my favorite cookbooks is Regional Italian Cuisine.

Well, I am 100% Italian so I make lots of Italian food. And it's getting to be holiday time again so I get to make Strufoli & Torrone! And my fiance is Danish so I now make Ebelskiver (kinda like a donut hole with filling) & I'm working on perfecting Kransekake.
