Company recalls tainted beef

Company recalls tainted beef

By JON KRAWCZYNSKI, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 58 minutes ago

MINNEAPOLIS - Cargill Inc. said Saturday it was recalling more than 1 million pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria, the second time in less than a month it has voluntarily recalled beef that may have been tainted.
No illnesses have been reported, said John Keating, president of Cargill Regional Beef.
The agribusiness giant produced the beef between Oct. 8 and Oct. 11 at a plant in Wyalusing, Pa., and distributed it to retailers across the country. They include Giant, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Wegmans and Weis.

Wonder how often we were affected growing up and didn't know it? The standards and notification practices were not as sophisticated as they are today.

It seems like almost everyday something is being recalled. If it isn't meat, it is the lead they use in children's toys. Although, we grew up with lead in paint on the walls, toys, etc. That's just how it was. Lead was a big additive years ago. We all seemed to be ok.

But, again, you have to wonder how many others had problems with lead and didn't know it was the lead causing the problem.

Yeah I turned out just fine.

LOL, but true, I think sometimes they do go overboard with this stuff. They used to have old post office Jeeps here adapted with this wide range mister that would go around spraying for mosquitoes when I was a kid. We had a lot less bugs gnawing on us back then. But they did kill all of our honey bees with it one year.

Now it seems there are more cases of encephalitis, so if the bug spray isn't around to kill you the mosquitoes are.

I remember those fogging, mosquito, spraying trucks. We would have to close all the windows when they came around at night. You could smell that horrible insecticide in the air for hours...it was terrible!

It was usually in the middle of summer and hotter than blazes in the house (no air conditioning back then, only fans). Even with closing the windows, and roasting, it would still creep in the house.

In the morning we would go outside and find dead birds. It was so extremely sad.

They use to spray for gypsy moths out here. That killed off all the lightening bugs.

I hate insecticides.

Yes, it seems you can't win one way or the other. If you don't kill the bugs they either bite you or destroy what you eat. Then if they do spray it gets everything, including people.

Huh, we still have mosquito trucks that run around here. You can always tell because it sounds like a big mosquito buzzing around in your ear. Although I'm not so sure how much good it does, ten minutes outside during dusk in the summer and you are covered in welts from all of the bites you receive.

I do find it really strange and scary how many cases of recalled food and toys we have. My mother, who has her tin foil hat securely in place at all times, has sworn for years and years (even before September 11) that this is the work of terrorists. I usually just roll my eyes, but sometimes I really do wonder.

You would think the companies selling this stuff would test more things more often before it ends up on the shelves. As you say ... especially in this day and time.

We grew up with most toys containing lead (we were taught NOT to put toys in our mouths) as did the paint on the walls.

We never wore helmets to ride bikes, cars didn't have seat belts (I would stand in the back), we skinned our knees and just put a Bandaid on it and ran back out, we'd step on nails and didn't run to the doctor for a shot, ate apples off the tree only to find they had worms...not saying these things were ok, but we survived just fine.

You would never hear a news story about lead because there were more important things to report.

Happy they have the means to find these things out today, but sometimes maybe the media may go a bit overboard?

Us too. Although when I hear the truck coming I try to close the windows or turn off the AC for a while.
