Retailers push their own cookbooks

Retailers push their own cookbooks

Macy's and Neiman Marcus present party ideas and a sort-of tribute to a trailblazer.
By Rick Nelson, Star Tribune

Tomorrow kicks off the holiday shopping season, and two major retailers want to steer gift-seeking browsers toward cookbooks. But instead of "Joy of Cooking" or "How to Cook Everything," Macy's and Neiman Marcus are pushing titles of their own. For "Great Gatherings" (Book Kitchen, $29.95), Macy's tapped the talents of its constellation of 16 star chefs, otherwise alliteratively known as the store's Culinary Council. Here's the gimmick: Each chef offers a half-dozen recipes that reflect their culinary mindset while fitting into some variation on entertaining. For example, Mexican food authority Rick Bayless wraps his head around a "Fiesta for Friends" and comes up with tomatillo-braised pork loin, cinnamon-scented margaritas and grilled shrimp with chimichurri sauce.

I have a lot of cookbooks on my wish list this year, so I'm glad there's a big push for them - they'll be easier to find

Barnes and Noble had an entire section dedicated to just Food Network cookbooks/celebs, which was kind of neat to see. I had no idea there were so many.

I almost sort of want to get a breadmaker and a breadmaker cookbook. But I don't know if I would actually use it or not. Finally after 23 1/2 years of life I'm tired of Wonderbread-esque bread and want something more.

They don't even sell Wonder bread out here anymore. Leftover turkey sandwiches, just weren't the same.

Guess the majority of the population in this area are into the whole grain breads, which is a huge market. The regular, old, white bread just doesn't cut it.

Too bad as PB&J needs the gummy white bread!

My kids call that cheap bread you can make a dough ball out of grandma bread because that's all my parent's ever buy.

Williams-Sonoma has about a billion and one cookbooks of their own. I've never bought them, but I have contemplated it as I've tried a few of the recipes off their website with success. I've said before though that I don't have many cookbooks and am leery of buying them as I can just print the recipes off the internet for free.

I'm not really a fan of the mushy white bread, even though I love bread! I've never liked it, not even before I learned it was bad and I usually love anything that is unhealthy and bad for me. I actually prefer multi-grain bread simply because I love the consistency.

I have the Williams Sonoma slow cooking book. I like it.

If I have to buy store bread I get the pepperidge farm farmhouse bread. It doesn't reduce to the gooey blob like the cheaper breads.
