What to Buy in Bulk

What to Buy in Bulk

If you can resist the temptation of loading up your cart with non-essential "oh-look-at-thats," buying in bulk at your local warehouse club can indeed save you a bundle.

AOL Money & Finance visited both a Costco and Giant grocery store in Gaithersburg, Md. to see which items make the most sense to buy "big."

Click through our gallery to see which items to buy in bulk.

Personally, I think you have to know what your needs are before buying. There are two of us, so buying the double boxed cereal isn't a good deal. It goes bad before we get around to eating it.

I disagree with the gasoline. We watch the prices all over and the Costco price is 9 times out of 10 lower. If we are going there to shop, we will get gas. We don't drive out of our way to get it. Making a car trip with multiple purposes saves money.

I sometimes shop at Giant. They are much higher than the stores around them unless the item is a bonus buy.

With just two of us, a few items in a warehouse club can add up quick, we rarely left there without spending $75.

I keep a sharp eye out for sales in the grocery stores, I work in one chain, but have no problem shopping in competitors stores. I also am a store brand shopper on many items so once again I can usually get a better price in the grocery store, and ALDI without having large amounts of stuff going stale.

I worked at BJ's warehouse club for a while, and even though I had a free membership, I rarely bought anything there. I guess many people do shop regularly because we were amazingly busy, even though we had Sam's Club, and Costco as direct competition.

I get some things from their list at Sams, Ketchup and Chocolate syrup are big money savers there for me. I think my kids could eat 25 gallon drums before it went bad if I could get it. I also get the aluminum foil

I my flour and sugar for baking, and they have great deals on chocolate chips to make cookies. And I get some of the little snack packages of crackers and things like that for the kids to take as school snacks. Cheese too, lots of good quality cheese I can reseal in the foodsaver bags.

Paper plates and things like that too.

Box stores are great if you have a family. I do buy TP, paper towels and soap from Costco and meat. They have excellent meat.

We have a few here, two in Cinci and one to open in Columbus. Placed several of my students there, the pay is excellent.
