Betty Crocker Puts New Icing on the Cookie

Betty Crocker Puts New Icing on the Cookie

March 11, 2008
-By Vanessa L. Facenda, Brandweek

NEW YORK Forget the cake. Betty Crocker is putting the icing on the cookie.

This month, the venerable desserts maker launches Decorating Cookie Icing. TV ads, which will air on most major holidays, debut this week.

Betty Crocker is touting the product as the first "easy-to-use" professional decorating icing. Typically, this form of hard icing, used for gingerbread houses and wedding cakes, has the wrong consistency for such small designs, said Kristi Bridges, creative director at The Sawtooth Group, Woodbridge, N.J., which handles the advertising.

The first TV ad breaks this week on ABC Family Network, Food Network, HGTV and Lifetime. Bridges said the 15-second spot is designed to promote cookie baking and decorating as a fun, bonding experience for the whole family.

I saw this ad today. Looks as though the icing comes out in a pretty wide squirt. One of the cookies shown had 3 stripes of icing and it was almost all covered. Maybe there are different tips though.

I doubt I'd use this product. Maybe young children will enjoy decorating the cookies with it, but I'd prefer to make my own.

Today, I did use my old Betty Crocker cookbook for the Best Chocolate cake recipe. Made cupcakes out of it and brought a half dozen to my hairstylist.

Decorated them with a made up frosting recipe using cream cheese, unsalted butter, vanilla, powder sugar and orange zest. Topped the cupcakes with the frosting and bittersweet chocolate shavings and orange zest.

They looked beautiful and tasted devine! (made mini bite size for me)

I love orange and chocolate together. Does your hairdresser share with the other people or does she hide the box in the back and keep them all for herself? I'd hide them but I'm afraid the wonderful smell would give me away and there would be a riot.

I used to send stuff to my husband when he was in Iraq and he would hoard. With the food they get to feed his guys he has always made sure his men had eaten all they wanted before he ate, but food from home he tried to keep to himself.

I don't think she shares. She showed the box to her client but not anyone who worked there. Took the box and put it in the fridge.

I must admit, they are really good! Adding the shaved chocolate and orange rind, made them look and taste wonderful.
