Men cooking more, study finds

Men cooking more, study finds

Posted by Emily Nunn at 3:10 p.m. CDT
There is a greater chance than any time in history that the man of the household will be cooking dinner tonight, according to The NPD Group, a consumer information company that included a helpful bar graph with their recent press release, just in case you don’t believe words alone.
Women still cook 78 percent of the meals prepared at home, says the study, but since 1993 man-made in-home meals have leapt a full 4 percent. The study did not mention whether any of these men were professional chefs, nor did it mention a strict definition of the terms “prepare” or “dinner.”
But one finding was crystal clear: with the increase has also come a rise in year-round grilling. So a lot of men cooking “in the home” are actually cooking “outdoors,” something that has probably been true since beginning of culinary history, i.e., the discovery of fire. (Pardon the sexist attitude, and correct us if we’re wrong.)
We’d love to hear from male home chefs: what’s for dinner 18 percent of the time?

My husband used to grill before we got the grill on my range top. He doesn't cook in my kitchen.

My husband's culinary skills pretty much extend to reheating things in the microwave. Although, he does have this ultra annoying habit of setting the microwave to reheat for five minutes and then opening the door after it's been on for only a minute or two, leaving the timer to blink until I notice it and cancel it. I don't know why this bugs me so much, but I find it to be the most annoying thing on the planet. If you only want something to heat up for 1 minute, why not set the timer for one minute?

He is capable of taking out the trash and recycling, so I keep him around.

Your microwave will die soon if you open the door before the timer goes off.

Had the repairperson here last year and found that out the hard way.

The repairperson said to NEVER open the door if the timer still has time on it. You need to hit the 'clear' and then open it.

Or, if he wants to reheat something he should do it in one minute increments and wait for the timer to go off.

Then, set it again if it isn't heated through. This will save you big $'s in the long run...trust me, we've been there!
