Few sandwiches claim to have a cult following like the hamburger.
Jimmy Buffet's "Cheeseburger in Paradise" celebrates the sandwich, entire books are devoted to the best roadside hamburger joints and Food Network programs detail the burger's attributes.
Indeed, the burger pedigree is on the upswing as restaurants and bistros turn the fast food favorite into a gourmet treat.
