Rep Power: 10 | Whats For Dinner? Kangaroo? Ummm... ewwww. Quote: Aboriginal Foods
On my last day in Australia, Mark Pacione (Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry in the Archdiocese of Baltimore) welcomed me to join a group of Baltimore teens on an outing to learn about the Aboriginal culture. The Aboriginal tribes have a unique and beautiful culture. For them, it is very important to pass it on to future generations, from weapons and farming instruments, to tribal painting, to food! It was there I had kangaroo for a SECOND time! Honestly, I can’t say it’s my favorite meat. Still, I can see how the lean meat, coupled with the overpopulation of kangaroos in Australia, makes this meal an important part of a healthy Aboriginal diet. Because there is hardly any fat in this meat, it is recommended that it not be overcooked. This makes for a quick meal. The meat also takes on the flavors of different seasoning, so it can be as versatile as beef.
Although the cultural center offered three different types of meat for sampling during lunch, I had dinner at The Meat and Wine Company, a Sidney City Center restaurant that bragged about how good their kangaroo was. I wouldn’t rate this restaurant too high in my book. The service was unsatisfactory, complete with arrogant hostesses and an unknowledgeable waitstaff. Even though my serving of kangaroo made for a “pretty” plate, the medallions of kangaroo meat, served very rare, were entirely oversauced! But the overall experience of kangaroo was pleasant enough to pass on to you a hint about how to prepare it – just in case you swing Down Under and pick up a few kangaroo steaks for your next summer barbie (or Australian winter in July). Click here for a good kangaroo recipe, sure to make your taste buds hop! Get it? Hop!

Seriously though, you can get Kangaroo burgers in Houston. If memory serves me correct, it
was a little on the dry side. Last time I was there, about 5 years ago, they also had Caribou, but I don't see it on the menu now .. Ziggy's Healthy Grill : Menu |

Rep Power: 2 | Kangaroo, over sized rabbit ? haven't tried it yet but would be up to it, probably like us eating venison, or other wild game not available over there. Usually after the first bite it is just mind over matter, it matters if it taste good, and is chewable.

Rep Power: 0 | I'd like to see an Iron Chef Kangaroo battle.
Give them two live 8 foot tall adult Kangaroos (not caged but loose on the set), a Samurai sword, and 60 minutes.
That would give Bobby Flay a new meaning to the word "Throwdown"....
But I do believe I would pass on the "Joey Cordon Bleu".... |
