Chinese food gets a bad press. There is mistrust, a fear of it all. The US athletics team has taken its own food to the Olympic Games, while just days before the ceremony started the Beijing Food Safety Administration was having to issue statements insisting its food at the Olympic Village was 'perfectly safe'.
There is a Cantonese saying that the Chinese eat everything that flies, except airplanes; everything with four legs, except tables; and everything that swims, except submarines.
Wander outside the Olympic Village and the fast-food market in Beijing will be selling such delicacies as dog-brain soup, seahorse skewers and starfish fried in shark oil.
That all sounds frighteningly foreign but the British version of Chinese also has its horrors.
