My mother, a PhD in Women’s Studies, finds my obsession with food bewildering. “How can anybody care so much about all that?” she groans.
As writers Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page say: “Food has become our national obsession”.
Chefs now hold more intrigue for the American public than ever before, as evidenced by a rise in restaurant revenues and the phenomenal success of food-related media. A 2005 article in Nation’s Restaurant News mentions the ubiquity of the “culinary tourist” and the increase in the mainstream’s “overall consciousness” as it pertains to food.

Interesting article, could lead to a lot of interesting discussion and opinions. I for one find that there could be many sides to this story and many variables would come into play. But to keep it simple do you think the head chefs positions being that it takes so much from the home life (hence hardly none) has led to it being a male dominated position, and women knowing this have backed away from this profession, till now days when the marriage has lost its importance and a womens career is coming first and that is the reason for the influx of more head female chefs and also couples now running the restaurants as to divide the workload and still be able to have a somewhat home life beyond the food industry >

I agree. There are some women who want to focus exclusively on a career some want to do something that gives them time with the family. The nice thing is that it is possible to choose either depending on what you want.
