What is the difference between chefs and cooks?

There is a difference between a chef and a cook. It's subtle, but it's there.
The word "chef" dates back to the 1800s and is short for the French chef de cuisine. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, it means "a skilled cook who manages the kitchen (as of a restaurant)." In general terms, we think of chefs as those who have some sort of formal culinary training. In other words, they have earned their chef's coats.
On the other hand, a cook, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is "a person who prepares food for eating." I can't help but wonder if that definition is too narrow. Sure, cooks prepare food for eating. But it says nothing about how good that food is.

I believe we covered this topic a year or longer ago. Wasn't it Clove who set us straight on this answer? Just trying to jog my memory.
