It can be made at home.
It is not hard but can be very time consuming.
It's a process of buttering, folding, chilling and folding, chilling, folding etc.
You get the idea?
That's why most people who do a lot of baking, buy pre-made puff pastry.

I have wondered if you could make small narrow pieces of it putting it thru the pasta roller on a kitchenaid mixer.

I've never seen it done that way but I don't know why it wouldn't work.
Just keep the rollers at a wider setting than for pasta dough.
You don't want paper-thin puff pastery.
