The Next Iron Chef: how much can you gross us out?

The Next Iron Chef: how much can you gross us out?
By Mike Farley
Last night was the premiere of “The Next Iron Chef” on Food Network, the second such season that last year produced Cleveland’s Michael Symon and made fringe and now budding stars of Aron Sanchez and Chris Constantino. And just like last year, this season boasts ten very worth chefs. Here is the field:
Jehangir Mehta from New York City
Nate Appleman from San Francisco
Amanada Freitag from New York City (you may know her as an occasional judge on “Chopped”)
Seamus Mullen from New York City
Holly Smith from Seattle
Jose Garces from Philadelphia
Dominique Crenn from San Francisco
Roberto Trevino from San Juan
Eric Greenspan from Los Angeles
Brad Farmerie from New York City

My first question is, could they not find anyone from a state that doesn’t border an ocean? Or did Michael Symon already lay claim to that distinction? And by the way, the series is taking place in Los Angeles, a city that borders an ocean.

I had to turn it off last night and watch something else. I couldn't deal with the unlaid eggs. As it is just writing about it is grossing me out again.

I will eat just about any part of any animal, but the unlaid eggs grossed me out. The chicken feet, however... well, they're part of my standard weekend brunch, so I didn't find them all that gross or unusual!

I almost did that on ICA with battle offal!

I managed to watch it all.

On a side note, Brad Farmerie is adorable!

I had to switch it off and come back for the judging. I already feel sick, I don't need to make it worse.

I guess as a Iron Chef you have to be able to cook for who ever would eat that chit. But they do not need to subject us, to it. Cook normal food for a Citizen of a civilized world. Not some tribe that has been hiding in the jungle for 1000 of years.

Nor would I ever ask for it at a restaurant. What's the point? I couldn't watch it either.
They are really doing a number on their ratings...if you want us to watch, make food that we would eat in everyday life with a touch of gourmet added in. Obscure food does not interest me.

I kinda enjoyed watching the chefs trying to figure out what to do with all those obscure foods.

I loved AB walking around asking the chefs "What cha makin'?"

I'm just so glad he gets to eat during NIC - he always sounds so forlorn during Iron Chef! lol

Guess I was the only one the unlaid eggs didn't gross out. Unlaid eggs are nothing but the yolk of the egg without the white and the shell. I've seen plenty of them in my younger years on the farm dressing out chickens.

As for the chef that got the grasshoppers, I kept telling him to roast them and use them like nuts in a dish. Well, he got the roasting part and then blew it by just using them as a "topper" in his dish. And, yep... I've had roasted grasshoppers.
