No, you're not the only one that found Appleman distasteful. I thought he was rude and nasty. His made up cutesy stories were disingenuous. I was happy to see him go. I'm rooting for Freitag. I am also mystified by Mehta whom I find arroant and a not-so-great a chef.
I'm rooting for Mandy too. I have liked her ever since she appeared on ICA as a challenger. Her personality during that challenge positively lit up the kitchen.

She hasn't won one of the main challenges though, although it seems like she's come in second 2 or 3 times.
The fish balls were a mini challenge or quick fire or whatever the heck they call it. Nope, not a main challenge but she's been robbed a few times now.

I sometimes wonder if they are afraid people will think they are favoring her because she does so much work with the Food Network, so they slight her a bit for it. I think she was at her best in the last episode and she deserved a bit more praise than she got.
That's probably why she will win. They are keeping it low-keyed and then it will turn around in the end. Besides, they need another woman as an Iron Chef to balance out the selection, IMO.
I'd like to think she will win because she is good.

Taste, originality, skills, etc., should all be determining factors in the next iron chef. However, it is for a television show, and having a knack for entertaining might be an unspoken factor for the network/judges. Chefs Freitag, Garces, Trevino and Greenspan are/were the best at that, IMHO. Mullen doesn't do a thing for me.
I think it's a bit different with this show. Morimoto is rather reserved and even though his English has improved considerably since he started, it's difficult for him to present himself speaking on his own at times. But he's still a great Iron Chef.
I sure hope Freitag doesnt win. After hearing her annoying snarky comments on Chopped it would irritate me to no end to have her as an Iron Chef. I also do nto think she is qualified. She owns no restaurants and her claim to fame is being chef at a 2 star restaurant?
If she wins then it will be obvious that Food Network wanted her from the start and the series is all for show.
