Do what you do!
Like what you like!
I was just concerned that you were basing you preference on "...bacteria "crawling" into the wood deeper than the bleach can reach, since that stuff breeds..."
I don't think that part is accurate.
But if you have a fear, "do what you need to do".
No need to be frightful about food, cooking and sanitation.

Rep Power: 2 | I love my wooden spoons. I run them through the dish washer! They are still in decent shape after almost 10 years.
I prefer plastic cutting boards.

Rep Power: 10 | People are going to respond, "You aren't suppose to put wooden spoons in the dishwasher!" But guess what? I have done it for years as well. Hasn't hurt them at all and I feel they get much cleaner.
I do have some silicon utinsils but usually I grab the wooden spoons.

Rep Power: 10 | My cutting board is polypropylene it's surface is made to keep from dulling the knives and you don't have to worry about the germs getting below the surface.. |

Rep Power: 2 | My mom washes hers in the dishwasher as well, and they are really old, the same ones she would snap me on butt with when I got sassy, and I'm 33!
I have similar cutting boards, and run all of them through the dish washer as well.

Rep Power: 10 | They have some very pretty wooden spoons at Kohl's. I have thought about getting them for decorative purposes. I just don't think I could bring myself to use them. The germ theory stays in my mind.
The dishwasher idea would make me feel better about it. I have the heated wash and dry. Food Network Wooden Utensils |

Rep Power: 2 | Oooh those are pretty.
Mine are much more utilitarian I got them for under $2 at restaurant supply, and are quite sturdy. I also get my 1/2 sheet jellyroll pans there for under $5 each and they are nice heavy professional ones that will last forever. I only buy my rubber scaper/spatulas there as they are dirt cheap and the heads never fall off them, and they are less floppy than the ones from the store!

After you cut on a "antimicrobial" polypro cutting board for a short time, you will see the effect of your knives on the board. Little cuts and "scratches".
They make the board porous and susceptible to bacteria.
That's for what bleach rags (or the sanitizing cycle in the dishwasher) are.

Rep Power: 10 | But you can spray anti bacterial cleaner on mine THEN put it in the dishwasher. You can't do that with wood. The spray smell would stay on it and get on your food so don't kid YOURSELF. You can get this much cleaner than you can wood. I can put mine in the sink and pour clorox laden boiling water over it and let it sit in it. You can't do that with wood either.
I have had mine for years, you can sand out the scratches if you want, mine is solid thru the whole thickness of the board. Any place that does corian countertops can to it for you. And as pointed out in the cookbook thread you can save a tree. |

Rep Power: 2 | QVC sells an excellent set of 4 assorted-sized silicone spatulas in pastel colors, Prepology brand. I love them so much I bought a set for each of my daughters. They're a clear silicone but each one has a different colored stiff hard core that runs through the center of each one (so they don't bend). There's a regular spatula, a spoonula, an extra long spatula and one that's extra long and maybe 1 1/2" long that looks sort of like something you'd use to frost a cake; also excellent for scraping out the last of anything in a tall jar. I'm not a TV shopping junkie but I do like to watch QVC's kitchenware and gadget shows every Sunday at noon. I was mistaken about the type of cutting boards I have. They're polypropylene (the ones that come in dark colors) not acylic and rubber as I'd stated. They're the Jelli brand which are non-porous, non-absorbent, odor-resistant, dishwasher-safe and won't dull knives. I have 3, all in different colors. I also use those flexible cutting mats occasionally as well. They might not be good for your knives but the convenience of being able to pick it up and dump your ingredients into a pan without everything going overboard overpowers that drawback.
