If you mean can you adjust the color (or crust) of the bread, yes, you can. They normally have several settings like white bread, whole wheat, French, sweet, rapid-rise, etc. I have two. One of them has a white bread setting for light, medium or dark crust. Most of them have settings for dough (only), jams and jellies, pizza dough, etc. When I do mix and bake bread in the machine, no matter what setting I have it on, I always remove it 5 minutes before the timer goes off cause I prefer it a little less done.

Rep Power: 10 | Yes I was wondering more about the shape than the color, if you made say ... French bread, in the bread machine does it come out in a loaf shape like regular sandwich bread.
Jams and jellies? How does that work? |

Jams and jellies? How does that work? | I think bread machines are a great concept but sometimes I think traditional ways of baking something such as French bread are still best. That's not to say you couldn't bake French bread in the machine. It'll taste like French bread but will take the shape of the mixing pan (either rectangular or square). Like I'd said previously, I have a handful of recipes that turn out great mixing and baking them in the machine but, for other breads, I prefer to use it just to mix the dough and then form, let it rise and bake it in the oven in the conventional way. I've never made jams/jellies in the machine but they do have a heating element that helps dough rise so I'm sure this is involved in the jelly-making process. And I believe you can also bake breads without yeast in it like nut breads. Now, if you're a purist, like to knead dough and bake breads the old-fashioned way, that's fine. Some types (like ciabatta) have to be made a certain way. But if you're just a family who likes the taste of homemade bread but you don't have an awful lot of time to devote to it, then I'd say a bread machine is a good alternative. Just get out your butter, a knife and wait for the bell to ding, LOL.

Rep Power: 2 | I forgot to add that they also have timers. You can throw your ingredients in the machine, calculate the time you want a loaf of bread done in the morning, set it and you'll wake up to the smell of homemade bread.

Rep Power: 10 | That sounds nice. Especially for things like cinnamon bread. I like making mine in the stand mixer. But I could have fun with any kitchen gadget I think , at least for a while. There are some things I have bought that I use for a while then the new wears off and I don't use it as much. |

Rep Power: 10 | I know people who love their breadmakers and they sound amazing. My problem is, "Where would I store it?" They seem big. I just go to Panera.

Rep Power: 4 | I have goten to the point I willn't even eat toast if it isn't what my wife has made. If the bread machine broke this morning, I'd have another by noon.
