I would imagine that you'd need a powerful hood / fan to take the smoke to the outside.

Rival did or still does have a countertop unit that can be used indoors though.

It's not any more dangerous than using the grill (or a home fireplace). The grill in my range top can make a lot of smoke too. that's what I am using to do the smoking.

That's why I have the jet engine for a range hood.
