Kitchen Favorites: Kuhn Rikon Grinder

Kitchen Favorites: Kuhn Rikon Grinder

Even though I love to experiment and play in the kitchen, there are some things that quickly become my "go to" items. I have a drawer full of kitchen gadgetry, but my hand always seems to be drawn toward a certain knife or pair of tongs. I have a small garden full of unusual herbs, but I've worn a path using some more than others. So today begins a semi-regular series of entries centered on my kitchen friends, both in the form of tools and ingredients.

Kuhn Rikon Grinder

The Swiss are known for a good many things, like chocolate, banking, chocolate, and their complete inability to decide on one national language. They're also masters at making things smaller. They micronized the clock down to a something you could strap on your wrist, they took an entire drawer of knives and tools and crammed them into a pocket knife, and they built the world's largest particle accelerator at CERN to smash apart atoms, making tiny things even tinier. So it should be no surprise that they've figured out how to crush spices better than the rest of the world.

I would love a set of these, they use ceramic so you can grind salt, and it grinds from the top so when you set it down it will not leave a mess on the counter. Also it grind fine enough to do spices with. I need a white for salt, a black for pepper, a blue for spices, and a red one for multi colored peppercorns. I know I get carried away and yes two would do, but better to have what you would use than try to keep changing spices around in one.

I have looked at that grinder at my favorite kitchen "toy store" in Charleston several times. And, each time I've come close to buying one. Maybe next time I will. I do like the idea that now they have the interchangeable chambers for the grinder so you don't have to have several of them or dump it out and reload. I would probably tho still get two... one just for pepper and one to change the chambers on for different spices.
