The menu for a $1,000-a-head royal dinner proved spicier than advertised when Spain’s King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia – guests of honour during a visit to Florida – were subjected to some colourful language from Mario Batali, an American celebrity chef.
Frustrated that the audience would not quieten down when it was his turn to take the microphone, Mr Batali decided to make his point in no uncertain terms. “All you weasel f***wads in the back corners, can I have ten seconds of your time?” he said.
The colourful tirade did not stop there. Introducing José Andrés, another chef whose Los Angeles restaurant, The Bazaar, has won critical acclaim in the US press, Mr Batali continued: “The most motherf***ing stars of any Spanish restaurant in the US.”
According to The Miami Herald, Queen Sofia “blanched” at Mr Batali’s vocabulary. Other celebrity guests, including Julio Iglesias, the Spanish crooner who lives in Miami, and Charlie Crist, the Governor of Florida, were equally shocked. Gloria Estefan, the singer, started giggling.
For some reason many people just throw the 'F-word' into their conversation.
I can understand Mario's frustration with people not being respectful and continuing to talk during a time they should be giving their attention to the speaker.
I've been to many events were people are just rude and someone either stands up in the crowd and yells 'QUIET' or bangs on their glass so hard with their silverware it almost breaks.
he was out of line with the language imho-yes he could have said QUIET without the F and weasel - he also grabbed chef andres' butt and introduced him using the F word-really not cool
