Fire Threatens Napa Valley Homes and Wineries

ST. HELENA, Calif. (AP) — Hundreds of firefighters were battling a fast-growing wildfire Saturday that was threatening homes and wineries in the Napa Valley.
Fire officials said the blaze had burned 300 acres in the rugged hills just outside the wine country town of St. Helena. The fire was about 40 percent contained Saturday morning, and officials expected it to be fully contained on Sunday. More than 1,500 firefighters were working to contain the blaze.
A spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, Nancy Carniglia, said the fire had destroyed at least two structures and threatened 200 homes and several wineries.
About 100 residents left their homes under voluntary evacuation orders Friday night, and an evacuation center had been set up at St. Helena High School.
The cause of the fire was being investigated.

Elsewhere in California, firefighters halted the spread of a wildfire that burned about 300 acres of heavy brush, destroyed a home and threatened several wineries in Napa Valley.

More than 1,500 firefighters were called in to work the blaze, which state fire officials said was fully contained by Sunday morning.

Investigators said Saturday a rock struck by a car ignited the wildfire Friday afternoon. Strong winds in the hills near the wine country town of St. Helena caused the fire to spread quickly.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said all evacuation orders had been lifted, allowing 100 people to return home after the flames forced them to flee.

That's good. It's horrible to see homes and neighborhoods destroyed that way. Seems so common in California, and so wide sweeping when it happens.
