Apples: Part Of Wayne's Fall Heritage
The Wayne Independent - Oct 08 9:12 AMWAYNE COUNTY - "Now, this tree here, this is an Opalescent. It's an old apple, don't see many of these around nowadays. And...it blooms in the fall. It'll flower in May, and then again late in the year. Only apple tree I've ever seen that has blossoms and fruit on it at the same time."

This refrain echoes through the rhetoric of many in the Pennsylvania apple industry. Historically one of Pennsylvania's most important crops, apples were one of the three foods, along with white button mushrooms and venison, selected by Governor Ed Rendell to comprise the appetizer menu for his second inaugural ball- an event that made national television thanks to the cooking of celebrity chef Robert Irvine. Yet today, Washington exceeds Pennsylvania in apple production by more than a thousand percent.
