Hazelnut vs. Filbert, is there a difference other than name?
My daughter bought some nutella today and I started wondering about the hazelnut. When I was a kid my parents always called that nut a filbert. From looking online I have found places that say it's the same nut, other places say there is a slight difference. Anyone have an opinion on this?

No other than I love Nutella!
I remember my sister sending me some from Germany in the 80's before you could find it here, what a treat that was!MAC

Well, the filbert is a species of hazelnut but for all intents and purposes they're commingled and thought of as the same.

I had never heard the word hazelnut when I was a kid. My parents always called the filberts.

We called them both. However, here in the PNW, we are the largest producer of hazelnuts in the US. Outside of the US it is Turkey.
There is a Hazelnut Association and a big producer not far from here called Oregon Hazelnut.
Tip of the day.....did you know that if you eat something, say like garlic, and want to clear your breath, just eat a couple of raw hazelnuts? Instant breath cleanser!BerryBaby

They have something like that at the Oroweat Bakery outlet. I've never bought it but thought kids would love it. I have a jar of Nutella in the pantry and have never tried it. Maybe I need to crack that open!
