Analyst Says Shoppers Buy Soup on Price
Thursday November 1, 3:05 pm ET

JPMorgan Says Shoppers Buying Soup Brands Based on Price, Not New Product Innovation NEW YORK (AP) -- Soup-lovers are being swayed more by lower prices and promotions than by innovations in product lines at Campbell Soup Co. and General Mills Inc., a JPMorgan analyst said Thursday.Analyst Pablo E. Zuanic said in a note to investors that although shoppers appeared to favor General Mills' Progresso soup brand over Campbell's soups for most of 2007, their brand loyalty switched when Campbell's dropped its prices.

I buy some canned soups for the kids. But I never get soup for the family from a can. If all of us are going to eat it I make it myself.

I keep both Campbell's and Progresso on hand. Price doesn't matter as much as what I'm going to use the soup in such as the classic "Green Bean Casserole"...yes, I make it on Thanksgiving as it's one of my husband's requests and was a tradition in his family. That is the only pre-made item I use on Thanksgiving, everything else is made from scratch, even the cranberries and pumpkin pie. (Oh, except those crunchy onions from the can to put on top of the casserole.)

I have never liked the green bean casserole. My brother loves it and it certainly must be popular considering it's staying power over the years. I always just wonder why anyone would want to do that to a perfectly good green bean.

I agree with you. I much prefer my vegetables 'plain'. However, because it is a tradition with my husband, and he enjoys it once a year, I make it for him. He also requests creamed onions. I don't care for those either. In fact, he is the only one that eats them.
