BEHIND THE BAR: What liquor store is right for you?

BEHIND THE BAR: What liquor store is right for you?

The holiday season will soon be upon us. Now is the time to visit area liquor stores to stock up on wine and spirits for holiday guests. And you cannot walk into the home of a friend or relative empty-handed, either.

Liquor stores come in all shapes and sizes; some feature more wine while others showcase more liquor. Watch for the displays of holiday gift packs that include glasses and other neat goodies.

Many stores sell lottery tickets or offer televisions that feature videos on wine, liquor, even cigar tips. How about books on gourmet cooking? MORE HERE

All our liquor stores are state controlled. Years ago, we they even had all the liquor behind a counter and you had to 'ask' for your selection. You were not allowed to go behind the counter. Now we have stores, but all the prices are controlled by the state.

Also, they only carry 'hard' liquor, no beer or wine. Beer and wine are sold at grocery and convenience stores. Strange, huh?

It used to be that way here but they are privately owned now ... the law changed.

In Pennsylvania the grocery stores can't even carry wine or beer. You have to go to the state run facilities.
