I just don't see this

Growing your own

The Clarks represent a growing movement of people planting vegetable gardens for the first time in light of high food costs. Kathi Gariepy, above, a master ...

When I was kid everyone had a garden and I look around now and hardly anyone has a garden. Course with the huge variety and quality in the grocery stores it's understandable. Maybe the prices will change some.

The gardens seem cheaper, but people forget to add in all the little cost, like all the equipment, the fertilizer, the additional soil, and the number one thing their time that now is being used and not being paid for. To figure the true cost of that garden, there is more than just buying the plants and sticking them in the ground. Do not get me wrong I am all for the home garden, but realistically you need to look at the whole picture, and not go well look at all I get for just the cost of a few plants.

This year I had to replace all my patio pots. Had many that were plastic and they literally fell apart. The cost of one clay pot was $25.00 and I had to buy 5 of them. Daughter gave me the plants for Mother's Day so I didn't buy them. However, with the pots and potting soil, I'm up to about $155.00 and that doesn't include the water. Yes, it's spendy to have a garden but so rewarding.

If you really wanted to spend time on it you could start with seeds in the garage a short while before it's time to plant. That would help with some of the cost.

That saves a ton. I couldn't believe what they were getting for started plants. I started all my plants this year. Course that dang coon destroyed a bunch! 30 pounds of seed potatoes were only nine dollars.
