In season: Beets

In season: Beets
Daily Camera, CO - Jul 7, 2008
Beets were everywhere at the farmers' market this weekend. I've never been a huge fan of them - they pretty much taste like dirt. ...

Well mine are a bit late and I got about 80 feet of them. Found away to freeze them. Freezing about a bushel baskets of carrots today.

I love beets, but have never bought them fresh. I enjoy the canned baby beets on salads. Maybe I should give fresh ones a try. My grandparents use to grow them and I always enjoyed them.

I am not a fan of the beet. Alton did a great beet show. Almost made me want to try them again.

My grandmother turned me on them with those red canned things. The turnip is not a favorite of mine either. I think she ruined me on that one too.

My mom's mother wasn't big on seasoning. Bland and boiled was a big platform for a lot of her cooking. Egg custard was her favorite pie. Vanilla her favorite ice cream.

I like beets but I am the only one, so I do get them very often. Never tried them fresh, guess I need to do that, might even like them more. Did not have much of anything except green beans, and potatoes growing up, unless I went to the nieghbors, my best freind growing up, they always had interesting food, nothing like ours.
