Gingerbread Houses (Tips)

I've volunteered to make a Gingerbread House for a local children's hospital charity luncheon. Have always wanted to make one but was wondering...does anyone have any great decorating tips?

I went online and found some about using ice cream pointed cones, turning them upside down and decorating them with green candies to make trees. Also, using coconut for snow.

Anyone have any other candy decorating suggestions? I'm really looking forward to this. It will be such fun!!!

I used to make them every year. My favorite was a church, I made hard candy and poured that into the windows, and painted stained glass with paste food color.

You can also make trees using the ice cream cone trick and use green Icing with a leaf tip to cover it, then dust with powdered sugar.

I would cover my board with corn syrup, and sprinkle my coconut all over it, sometimes processing it in a food processor to make the shreds smaller.

I would also make a hole in the back and insert a light.

Make sure that you use a royal icing with no fat in it, that royal icing will make a great glue and make for a very sturdy house!

Yeah the icing is usually my problem when I have tried it. My roof always slides.

Thaks, Bakerman! That's a great idea for the coconut in the food processor. I'll definitely do that one.

What would use for the rooftop covering? I was thinking of Necco's.

I would use those little oreo 100 calorie pack cookies. They look like shingles.

Those would make great shingles!

When putting on the roof I try to find a glass or something to put under the edge to hold it in place, the roof can be the hardest thing to deal with.

Berry are you going to make your gingerbread house from scratch or are you going to use a kit?

I don't have any tips as I haven't made a gingerbread house since I was kid with my mom, but I just wanted to say that this is a very sweet thing for you to do.
