Kids were never overweight until PE was eliminated and computers became the form of entertainment.
What ever happened to Kick the Can, Hide and Seek, Tag, riding bikes, Hop Scotch, Jump Rope, Climbing trees?? Physical activity far outweighed what we ate, but way back then, we ate healthy.
There were no fast food options. We ate homemade food which usually consisted of things we grew...oh, surpirse! Tomatoes, green beans, different lettuces, corn....if you could grow it, that's what you had for dinner. Meat was a treat, not a given.
Soda and ice cream were a weekend treat and then, not every weekend. Water was the drink we had and ...a HUGE thing was...when you came in from outside, you went right to the bathroom to wash your hands. There was no excuse, you just did it! No wonder we were healthy and happy.
Thank goodness for our upbringing for I am a very healthy and happy adult!BerryBaby

Back the good ol' days when I was a wee one, I can only remember one overweight kid in my grade school class and I think her's must have been a medical one, for not only with she overweight, but she was head and shoulders above everyone else.
We ate like little pigs when I was a kid, but then it was home-cooked food and we worked on a farm and my brother and I played hard... basketball, swimming in the pond, exploring the woods, horseback riding, riding our bikes, etc. There was very little times of having a soft drink or eating at a fast food place... or even eating out at all. Our "treats" was fresh fruit, watermelon and cantaloupes (grown on our farm) and home-made ice cream (made from goat's milk from our own goats.)
Computers, TV, etc are nice... but it's a shame that kids today can't experience some of what I knew as a child growing up in the 50's and 60's.Most of all, cook from the heart, and you’ll never be lonely when the dinner bell rings! - Chef Robert Irvin

I am afraid to let my kids go all over the place like everyone did when I was a kid. I don't like them to leave the street in front of the house. Too many bad things out there.

True, but there are a lot of things they can play in the backyard. We would spend all day in the yard playing ball, school, playing in the little swimming pool that you had to blow up, tag, running through the sprinkler, eating lunch on a blanket and having a picnic, drawing the flowers and trees...it was endless fun for us but that was we had.
TV was a family thing and sometimes we would get to watch Saturday morning cartoons while we ate our breakfast. Then, we were out the door.
Those were great times.BerryBaby

My brother and I had to stay on our own land too... only going to other places with one of our parents. But, then we had over a 100 acres to play in. We had a really big backyard.

I don't watch the View either so of course I had to check out this thread & see what the hens, or the Queen Hen, did. How extremely rude & shortsighted to try & pin childhood obesity on Paula Deen. Maybe someone should put sedatives in her coffee to keep her from opening her self righteous mouth. Yes, she is right, it's all Paula's fault for force feeding everybody's children - really, how does she find the time?
Does nobody take responsibility for their actions anymore? I'm pretty sure that parents are feeding their own children. At least I think - heck maybe they're not anymore. Just giving the little rotters some cash & sending them to the fast food joint. "Get Mommy a Super Size Meal!".
Ah yes, it's all Paula's fault indeed.

I think Barbara has started believing her own press releases about how important she is. She has gone from respected journalist to pompous [insert a picture of a donkey here].
