When it comes to food, all Savannah roads seem to lead to The Lady & Sons at 102 Congress St. in the historic district.
That's the flagship restaurant of Paula Deen, queen of Southern comfort food.
Fans queue up for hours before the restaurant opens for lunch. I got lucky on a November weekday. At 11:30 a.m., the usual line around the block was nonexistent and I breezed inside. Diners were feasting on a moderately priced buffet of fried chicken, collard greens, cheese biscuits and rich desserts galore.
In a place where mayonnaise and butter are mantras, I probably consumed a year's dose of cholesterol — without regrets.
Don't expect to see Deen, known for her sassy wit and risque quips worthy of Mae West. She has become too famous to avoid being mobbed, with a thriving business empire that includes restaurants, Food Network TV shows ("Paula's Home Cooking," "Paula's Party"), cookbooks and a magazine.
